My MMVAs Red Carpet Experience and Meeting Darren Criss
Here it is! I wrote out the entire day so I can look back and remember my experience, but I’ve divided this up into parts so you can read the parts you want (which I assume is the Darren part, scroll down). I warn you that it’s quite a bit fangirly, I wrote right from the heart. However I was very put together when he was in front of us which was a shock, I was worried about embarrassing myself. Anyways, more below the cut!
Our adventure started early. softyklisses, ccolfer, and I departed for Toronto together just after 4 in the morning, all of us running on no sleep. The bus ride wasn’t so bad with softyklisses sitting next to me, we talked the entire way so it didn’t even seem that long. When we got to Toronto we parted ways with Danica and met with gleefully-happy and we made our way down to the red carpet area.
The Waiting Part
When we got there they were setting up the stage and nothing but the actual red carpet was set up, it was really neat to see how they put everything together. At the stage we asked someone standing there where the red carpet line was and he told us around the corner, but he told us the line was already two blocks long and there was probably 200 people there. We were immediately discouraged, we had not expected it to be that packed already at not even 7am. We saw afireinside and blazerdapperlove, who were there two hours earlier, up near the front of the line and they sort of filled us in on what was going on since none of us were from Toronto and had never been to a red carpet. It was awesome to see more Darren fans there.
We made our way to the back of the line with not much hope, because we were like 5 gated areas back. We sat down and began the wait, filling our time with chat about Darren, Chris, Klaine, fan-fiction, basically real life Tumblr. It was wonderful.
We discovered that about 80-90% of the people there were there to see Justin Bieber and apparently the line was nothing like it was the years previous because of him. The second largest fanbase was definitely Ed Sheeran. We spotted maybe about 10-20 Darren fans (there could have been more of course). gleekto came in to join us in the afternoon and it was fantastic getting to know some mature fangirls of Chris, Darren and Klaine. I felt like we all had so much in common. It was nice to fangirl and talk to people who understand!
Eventually they started moving people up and squishing them together. By some miracle, we ended up all the way up in the first gated area, but just so. The people after us ended up in the second. Let me just say, it was the longest day of my life. Hours seemed to go by so, so slowly. The heat wasn’t bad in the morning, but got pretty bad as the day went on. We were able to sit during most of that waiting time so that was a blessing. It also rained, but only for a little bit.
It was really neat because different companies had sent people out to the streets where we were. Subway was giving away coffee, cookies, and free gift cards for guessing song lyrics. We got free milkshakes too, there was also free shirts, buttons, and random other things. The most annoying part was that people always seemed to think we were being let in so everyone would stand up and move closer to the gate opening. Then security would tell at everyone and tell them to back up. Repeat that about 100 times.
The Red Carpet Wait
Around 4:30pm (god that was a lot of waiting) security started letting people in 10 people at a time. They were very, very serious and there was a lot of security around as we entered the red carpet area. It was kind of neat to actually stand on the carpet on the way to the area we had to go to. By some miracle we ended up with a really good spot, one row back behind some Justin Bieber fans. We got to know the Bieber fans in front of us and absolutely no one around us knew who Darren Criss was (which was good for us). The Bieber fans told us we could move up when Darren came around so we could get our stuff signed, and I now hold a huge appreciate for nice Justin Bieber fans. Seriously, those girls were amazing and so kind. Waiting the next few hours was the worst. There was not a lot of room and it was so, so hot. It rained again and then got incredibly humid. Most of us were feeling not so great, most of us felt like fainting for a large part of the red carpet just because we were running on no sleep, not much food/water (to nervous/anxious to eat) and the heat.
Finally around 7:30pm some people started arriving. I honestly did not know most of them. I noticed like Selena Gomez, Perez, Nelly Furtado, Justin Bieber of course, and a couple others. I really was only interested in Darren.
I almost screamed when he arrived at the end of the carpet and we could hear him doing the interview over the speakers. We couldn’t see him very well, but I did see him signing farther down the line in two spots. After that he crossed the carpet and did an interview (which all the stars did). He was standing in the middle of the carpet after the interview but facing away from us. Everyone was yelling everything so yelling wouldn’t have done any good, so we raised our poster made by the wonderful gleefully-happy (it said “Canada Loves Darren and Chord”) and we all held our playbills from H2$ in the air. Ricky (Darren’s manger) noticed us and cracked a big grin, and poked Darren to get his attention. Darren turned around and looked at us and god, if I could only show you the expression on his face. His whole face lit up like a motherfucking Christmas tree. He motioned to Ricky that he was going to come over to our spot and then, Darren was in front of me.
The first thing he said when he came over was “I love your sunglasses!” because gleefully-happy and I were wearing pink sunglasses and softyklisses had adorable pink sunglasses earrings. softyklisses told him that he was amazing in How To Succeed and how he simply must come back to Toronto and do a concert of his own music. I was too far back originally to hand him my playbill so I gave it to the Bieber girl in front of me and he signed that for me. The Bieber girl also gave me the autograph he signed for her, what a sweetheart. After signing our playbills he signed the poster, which was hilarious. He signed his name with a heart, but also wrote something else. The poster now reads, “Canada Loves Darren, and Chord smells.” Darren, you cheeky son of a bitch. Adding a comma in there and everything.
At this point I don’t think I had said anything to him. I was basically staring at him (not in a creepy way or anything, just in an attentive way) because god he’s just stunning in real life and he was right there. His scruff was absolutely perfect and his eyes. While in my trance he looked up at me and said something along the lines of, “Could you pass me your sunglasses?” which were sitting on top of my head. I was still a bit lost in his eyes and oh my god did Darren just talk to me? so I was like, “Who, me?” And he was like “Yeah!” so I reach and pass him my glasses and he signs them. What was funny is the Bieber girl in front of me said to him, “This girl is a really big fan of yours you know!” and I blushed like an idiot.
As he was handing them back to him I asked him if I could shake his hand and he was like, “PSH, of course!” so I shook his hand. I touched Darren Criss. And to be honest, I may have lost consciousness for a moment and I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that. His hand was really soft and lovely and it was just a really fulfilling handshake. I have wanted to shake that mans hand for a really, really long time. All I remember is me saying thank you, or possibly thank you so much, I don’t even remember him passing the glasses back to me or if he said anything after that because I was in like a weird post-handshake haze of I can’t believe that just happened.
As soon as he walked away I promptly started to shake like a damn leaf and cry a little bit (it was out of my control) because jesus christ I just met Darren Criss. I then look down at the glasses and notice he’d written, “These are mine!” and then signed his name and then I just burst out laughing because god damn, this fucking guy. I can’t even.
After The Carpet
After we met Darren we decided to leave because we were all exhausted and ready to pass out. We went back to gleekto’s house (via subway, which was an adventure) and had ourselves a pajama party, complete with a gathering around gleekto’s laptop. We watched Darren do his rendition of “sorry for party rocking” and looked at photos of him from the carpet, to which we could squee in real life together with like-minded people. After that we all promptly fell asleep due to pretty hardcore exhaustion. I can’t believe it’s all over already and I’m back at home in front of my laptop when this time yesterday I was meeting Darren with my Tumblr friends. I feel so happy and honoured to have those girls in my life now.
Some Final Emotional Thoughts About Darren
I know we all know this, but Darren is truly one-of-a-kind. There has never been and will never be anyone like him. Meeting him only made me more sure of that. He is a massive inspiration to me and he’s my idol, seeing him and meeting him is something I’ll never forget.
He has this way of making you feel special when he looks and talks to you. He was so thankful and calm, regardless of what was going on around him. People were throwing their MMVA paddles in his face for him to sign and he took them gracefully and smiled and paid attention to everyone he could. He’s so incredibly sweet and he has such a kind heart. He was such a cheeky bastard, he somehow made me love him even more than I already do.
